After parting ways with Google Maps, Apple received a lot of backlash being its Apple Maps application was inferior. Well Apple is determinded to dominate the mobile GPS market with its recent purchase of WifiSLAM. What does WifiSLAM do and what was the price tag on the company? Find out below.
WifiSLAM is a two-year-old Silicon Valley-based startup which specializies in indoor mapping based on WiFi signals. This will expand on Apple Maps which currently does not have indoor mapping features, however Google does offer indoor mapping of shopping malls and airports. That feature is only available Android devices so with Apple buying WifiSLAM there will eventually be a huge expansion on iOS devices mapping capabilities.
The company describes itself on its website:
“We are building the next generation of location-based mobile apps that, for the first time, engage with users at the scale that personal interaction actually takes place. Applications range from step-by-step indoor navigation, to product-level retail customer engagement, to proximity-based social networking.”
An Apple spokesman briefly discussed the acquisition, saying the company “buys smaller technology companies from time to time” but did not expand from that comment. Representatives from WifiSLAM declined to comment on the deal. Inside sources however said the deal recently closed and was for about $20 million.
